Religious places of Shimla

The state of Himachal Pradesh is also known as " Dev Bhoomi" or the land of Gods. The state is adorned with temples, churches and Buddhist monasteries scattered here and there. Shimla the capital city of the state is also known for its religious places. People from all across India throng to these religious places to pay their homage to God and Goddess. During a tour to Shimla visitors can explore these places of religious importance. Though Hinduism dominates the region but one can finds a beautiful amalgamation of different religious places as well. The hill station is adorned with temples, churches and Buddhist monasteries that show the glimpses of the faith of the people of Shimla. Some of the important places of worship in Shimla are as listed below:- Bhimakali Temple:- The temple of Bheemkali is a major tourist attraction of the town. It is renowned for its architectural splendor and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Built of wood the unique thing about this temple is that it represents a unique amalgamation of Hinduism and Buddhism. In the year 1927 another temple was built right next to the existing temple which houses the 200 years old idol of Goddess Bhimkali.

Jakhu Temple:-Located on the famous Jakhoo Hill the Jakhoo temple is one of the major tourist attractions of Shimla. Dedicated to Monkey God Hanuman the temple is situated at an elevation of 2,455 m above the sea level is hardly 2 km from the Ridge. It is believed that Lord Hanuman rested on the top of the Jakhu Hill for sometime after He went back to place the mountain which has the herb sanjeevani to its original site. According to a popular legend it is believed that the top of the hill got flattered due to Hanuman's weight. It is a highly revered place of Shimla and is thronged by devotees in huge numbers. The shrine is also a hot spot for monkeys which gather here in large numbers and generously accept the eatables given to them by the visitors.

Kalibari Temple:- The famous Kalibari temple is situated very close to the Mall is dedicated to goddess Shyamala Devi from which the name of the town Shimla is derived..Goddess Shyamala is an incarnation of Kali to whom the temple Kalibari is named. Temple faces heavy rush during the festival of Diwali and Durga puja as it s thronged by large number of devotees.

Christ Church & St. Michael's Cathedral:- Christ Church & St. Michael's Cathedral in Shimla are the specimen of architectural splendors. The construction of the church took the span of 11 years from 1846 to 1857 and is considered as the second oldest church in North India. The splendid church is located near the Ridge and looks absolutely magical during the nights when illuminated with lights. Many devotees and followers from all over India visit this beautiful church which is a land mark of Shimla. Right next to the church is a library built in the year 1910 by James Ransome is built in typical Elizabethen style and has a great collection of books and ancient scriptures.

Sankat Mochan Temple:- Located on the Kalka-Shimla highway , on NH-22 the Sankat Mochan Temple is located in calm and serene surroundings with the imposing mighty Himalayas in the backdrop. Around 1950 Baba Neeb Karori ji Maharaj came here and found this place a perfect spot for meditation and self introspection. Later on his followers and devotees on 21st June 1966 sanctified a temple over here dedicated to lord Hanuman. Earlier it was a small temple but now due to large inflow of devotees the temple now sprawls on huge area that offer multiple facilities to its visitors.

Tara Devi Temple:-Tara Devi Temple is located on Tarav Parvat on the western side of Shimla about 15 km from Kalka-shimla Highway near Shoghi village. Located on the top of the hill it appears that the goddess Maa Tara Devi seems to keep everyone under Her protective gaze. Breathtaking surroundings calm and serene atmosphere has soothing and rejuvenating effect on its visitors.
